I joined the Scots Guards in Boy Service in 1946, went through the ranks, learned all instruments, was appointed Drum Major in 1953, made Senior Drum Major in 1961, moved back to Canada in 1962 to take over The Powell River Pipes & Drums, then moved to New York to represent Henry Potter & Co.’s partners in Manhattan and to teach the US Military Staff Bands during a ‘Europeanization process’. Became Director of Music of The Merchant Marine Academy Band, then to Colonial Williamsburg Foundation in 1971, where I was Musick Master, then, eventually, Director of Music, for 20 years. Now semi-retired.
